Not only that, he has seemingly crazy theories about people living inside of some elaborate simulation.

This is the first time I’ve heard of Bostrom, which is why I share it here.

Unthinkable as it may be, humanity, every last person, could someday be wiped from the face of the Earth. We have learned to worry about asteroids and supervolcanoes, but the more-likely scenario, according to Nick Bostrom, a professor of philosophy at Oxford, is that we humans will destroy ourselves.

      The Overlook by Michael Connelly

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Written originally as 16-part serial in the New York Times, The Overlook was re-edited with a completely new ending chapter and put into novel format.

I’m a fan of serialized fiction and would have found it a kick to read it in the NYT as it was being published, but the simple plot line and single large twist doesn’t seem to hold up as a novel on its own. Not compared to Connelly’s other work.

As a serial: Yes, as a novel: No.

It’s an easy read to breeze through. I’ll give it that. Read it as a break between some of his better stuff.

I haven’t finished it the book, but I can tell this is an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to get into the players of the genre.

It includes one written story, TRU$TWORTHY, by Ken Lizzi about a disgruntled corporate worker bee who wasn’t born yesterday.

As a light graphic novel reader, I appreciate the variety of writing and artwork all in one book as an introduction to a deeper world. These 13 stories, all in black and white, are forced by their brevity to be Hitchcockian, offering a twist at each conclusion. I enjoy the tight compositions that need to be resolved in a couple of pages.

I picked this puppy up at Hourglass Comics in Port Moody.
