IPO Traffic Up. Are We Coming Back?

Google Analytics IPO

A Google Analytics search for “IPO” (Initial Public Offering) is showing increased activity from July onward. While the IPO market has been frozen during the economic crisis, I hope this is a sign of better times to come.

I was encouraged to search for this after seeing a health supplement company on Twitter announce they were to be the first retail IPO since 2007.

Here’s to new business and less fear in 2010!

What will You do Today that Affects Tomorrow?

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be.
Now put foundations under them
.” -Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau, 1817 – 1862, was an American author, poet, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, historian, philosopher, and leading transcendentalist. He is well-known for his treatise Civil Disobedience in which he espouses much-quoted libertarian values. The smaller the government, the better and all that. From the existing state of affairs in America, his ideals failed miserably. That didn’t mean his work went to waste. The concept of civil disobedience carried on and lived in the practices of Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr. They built the foundations, and the result is clear today.

Which brings me to my next quote:

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” -Nelson Henderson

The Hustle: Is it in You?

Chris Brogan videoblogs on how he’s become an overnight success. To sum it up, when you get to bed at 12:45 a.m. only to rise at 5:45 a.m. for an event and apply that work ethic over a number of years, you’ll become an overnight success.

Chris puts it well, so I am re-posting the video from his blog post:

Four Ways Facebook's Redesign Benefits You

Facebook has recently unveiled a remodelling of its front page in a goal to “[simplify] the user experience on the home page by introducing Top News and Recent Activity streams.”

These changes will help you:

1. Discover who your friends are friending – Once part of the regular news stream, Facebook is reinstating the ability to see who your friends become friends with, allowing for greater discoverability of mutual friends. Rekindle that old flame – rekindle it!

2. Catch up on what you missed while having a life – with the Top News stream, you can see what happened while you were offline. The new single relationship status of that special someone you’ve had your eye on won’t elude you anymore. Toggle to the Recent Activity view for what’s going on in real-time.

3. Spend time on what matters to you – In addition to knowing who your friends are friending, you can once again view photo-tags, event RSVPs, group memberships and now birthdays on the main page.

4. Discover services or products more applicable to you – New engagement ads appear in the Recent Activity and Top News views through your friends RSVPing or fanning services. This is a more organic process that will be less intrusive.

Overall these changes are good. It may take a little experimentation for you to get a feel for the new interface, but overall, these moves are positive.

Four E-Readers for 300 Bucks or Less

While I still consider myself a traditional book person, I’ve always wondered about the convenience of an e-reader. The prime reason I’m interested is having information at my fingertips. While Amazon has made some controversial moves with the Kindle, and some authors are less than thrilled with the licensing arrangements for the technology, I’d like to look at what’s out there.

Recently, Sony has released an electronic reader called simply Sony Reader. To promote it, they’ve called on Peyton Manning and Justin Timberlake:

Here they are with a link to their respective sites:

1. Amazon Kindle ($260)
2. CyBook by Bookeen ($250)
3. Sony Reader ($300)
4. Barnes & Noble Nook ($250)

I haven’t used any of these, but I can see how it might change the publishing industry. At the $300 mark, I’d be afraid of getting sand in my reader at the beach during marathon summer reading sessions.

If you have a special tech geek in your life. These are something to consider for the Christmas shopping season.

Mashing Up Google Street View

Jay-Z’s Blueprint III has been on heavy rotation on my ipod and computer for the past month or so. One of the songs, Empire State of Mind with Alicia Key’s is off the hook. Throughout the song, the Jigga Man drops a number of references to hot spots in New York. Fast Company took the initiative and decided to plot each of the points. From his Tribeca loft to his stash spot on 560 State Street:

Band The Editors have made a similar move creating a Google Street View mashup with some original content, pointing out the locations that served as inspiration for their music:

Blogging from my Blackberry

I had never tried it before, so I thought I would give it a shot. This is my first post from a Blackberry. I just logged into my dashboard the way I would any other time.

Shame I don’t have much more to say. I’ll be sure to have something extremely urgent next time I do this.

What are Twitter Lists?

In limited-release, Twitter lists is a new feature for your Twitter account. For example, you could create a list of social media gurus, PR folks, wineries, local hotels, or any compilation. Twitter developers say “lists are public by default (but can be made private) and the lists you’ve created are linked from your profile. Other Twitter users can then subscribe to your lists. This means lists have the potential to be an important new discovery mechanism for great tweets and accounts.”

They’re only being rolled out to a select-few individuals, but keep on the lookout for an “add to list button” for your Twitter account soon.
